    Readers’ Assessment of the University E-Library Facilities and Services

    The  e-library users of the Faculty of Law, Nnamdi  Azikiwe University, Awka, was used to conduct  a survey   to ascertain their opinions on the facilities and services provided for their use in the areas of adequacy of computers, accommodation, seats, tables, power supply, hours of operation,  ventilation, databases accessed,  staff/users relationship.  Questionnaire was administered to 154 of the students in a planned order, in such a manner that every user on entering the library was administered with a questionnaire. This exercise lasted for one week and was done in such a way that there was no duplication of questionnaire administration.  All the administered questionnaire were duly returned representing 100% return.  The work revealed that the users were satisfied with the following facilities/resources: accessing e-mail, general web browsing, sanitation, lighting, ventilation, chairs and tables, opening hours, security.  Equally, the following challenges with using the facilities/resources were revealed: slow access speed, limited access to computer, too many information retrieved, takes too long to view/download pages, power failure and limited bandwidth, closing time.    It is recommended that the law library management should note the areas required for improvement and pay special attention to the areas of comments by students.  Awareness should also be created on the ICT services provided to enable students explore them.     An optimum dynamic priority-based call admission control scheme for universal mobile telecommunications system

    The dynamism associated with quality of service (QoS) requirement for traffic emanating from smarter end users devices founded on the internet of things (IoTs) drive, places a huge demand on modern telecommunication infrastructure. Most telecom networks, currently utilize robust call admission control (CAC) policies to ameliorate this challenge. However, the need for smarter CAC has becomes imperative owing to the sensitivity of traffic currently being supported. In this work, we developed a prioritized CAC algorithm for third Generation (3G) wireless cellular network. Based on the dynamic priority CAC (DP-CAC) model, we proposed an optimal dynamic priority CAC (ODP-CAC) scheme for Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS). We then carried out simulation under heavy traffic load while also exploiting renegotiation among different call traffic classes. Also, we introduced queuing techniques to enhance the new calls success probability while still maintaining a good handoff failure across the network. Results show that ODP-CAC provides an improved performance with regards to the probability of call drop for new calls, network load utilization and grade of service with average percentage value of 15.7%, 5.4% and 0.35% respectively

    Is renal medullary carcinoma the seventh nephropathy in sickle cell disease? A multi-center Nigerian survey

    Introduction: Previous studies had enlisted renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) as the seventh nephropathy in sickle cell disease (SCD). Clinical experience has contradicted this claim and this study is targeted at refuting or supporting this assumption.Objective: To estimate the prevalence of RMC and describe other renal complications in SCD.Materials and methods: 14 physicians (haematologists and urologists) in 11 tertiary institutions across the country were collated from patients’ case notes and hospital SCD registers.Results: Of the 3,596 registered sickle patients, 2 (0.056%) had been diagnosed with RMC over a ten year period, thereby giving an estimated prevalence rate of 5.6 per 100,000. The most common renal complication reported by the attending physicians was chronic kidney disease (CKD). The frequency of routine renal screening for SCD patients varied widely between centres – most were done at diagnosis, annually or bi-annually.Conclusion: The ten year prevalence of RMC in Nigerian SCD patients was determined to be 5.6 (estimated incidence of 0.56). RMC is not more common in SCD patients and therefore cannot be regarded as a “Seventh Sickle nephropathy”. Most of the managing physicians reported that the commonest nephropathy observed in their SCD patients was chronic kidney disease.Keywords: Renal medullary carcinoma, seventh nephropathy, sickle cell disease, Nigerian surve

    Improvement in the nutritive value of corn stover after solid-state fermentation with Pleurotus ostreatus is reported. Two ruminally cannulated dairy cows were used in an in vitro study arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial design with four replicates using P. ostreatus-treated corn stover.
